Run the back of your hand over the paint after a tunnel wash. If it feels gritty rather than glassy, the film is still there and wax applied over it just seals it in.
Bug splatter is acidic. Left through a valley summer it eats into the clear coat, and after that it is a correction job rather than a wash.
Hot brake dust embeds into the wheel finish. It needs a dedicated wheel process, not the same mitt used on the paint.
Central Valley water leaves mineral deposits that dry into rings. Caught early they wipe off. Left in the sun they etch.
Oxidation is the top layer of clear coat breaking down in UV. A decontamination wash and a protective layer slows it down considerably.
A wash and wax is usually a couple of hours depending on size and condition. We come to you with our own water and power, so a driveway or a parking space is enough. Shade helps, and if there is none we work around the sun rather than letting product flash off on hot paint.
If the paint has visible swirls in direct sun, or spider-webbing from automatic washes, wax will make it glossier for a few weeks but the marks stay. That is a paint correction job. We will say so rather than sell you a wax that hides it until the next wash.

Yes. Brushes in automated washes carry grit from every car before yours, which is where most swirl marks come from. Hand washing with clean media avoids that.
